Nosy Be
Vanilla from Nosy Be
The words “Nosy Be vanilla” primarily indicate where the fruit was grown and prepared. It is generally Vanilla planifolia cured in the Bourbon tradition, not a botanical species unique to the island.
Climate, shade, harvest maturity and curing can all influence the finished aroma. Origin matters, but it never replaces an assessment of the bean itself and the care taken during preparation.

Origin and botany
Nosy Be is not a separate variety
Two Vanilla planifolia beans can differ because of plant material, soil, shade, weather, harvest maturity and the decisions made during curing.
However, the available genetic research did not find a clear regional separation among the Malagasy Vanilla planifolia samples studied. Nosy Be therefore describes a terroir and a provenance, not a new species.

Quality
What to look for in a good bean
A well-prepared bean should be supple, fleshy and aromatic, with no suspicious smell. A dark, slightly glossy surface is common, but appearance alone cannot establish quality.
Madagascar Bourbon vanilla is often described as round, warm and woody, with cocoa, honey or dried-fruit nuances. The balance genuinely varies from one batch to another.
- Supple and fleshy rather than dry and brittle
- A clean, generous aroma with no foreign smell
- A healthy surface
- Clear information from the seller about origin and preparation
Uses
Whole bean, extract or prepared product
Whole beans suit custards, ice cream, baking, syrups and infused rum. Split the bean lengthwise, scrape the seeds and let the pod wall infuse as well.
Extract is useful when regular, quick dosing matters. Other vanilla creations offer different ways to enjoy the aroma. The right format depends on the recipe, infusion time and intensity required.
- Baking and custards: seeds plus the infused pod wall
- Drinks and rum: a slow whole-bean infusion
- Fast, repeatable dosing: vanilla extract
- After opening: seal well and keep away from heat and light

Visit
Understand vanilla before choosing it
Jardin & Vanille is at Croisement Ampasindava, Nosy Be 207. The free discovery stop takes about 25 minutes and presents the essential stages of vanilla through an information exhibition.
The shop then lets visitors compare the available formats. WhatsApp can be used to ask a question or reserve products for collection, while the discovery stop remains open during business hours.
This is a short information stop inside the shop, not a museum or a plantation tour.
FAQ
Vanilla from Nosy Be
Is Nosy Be vanilla a different species?
No. The name indicates provenance. Locally grown and prepared vanilla is mainly Vanilla planifolia, the same species used in Madagascar’s other major growing areas.
What does Bourbon mean?
Bourbon is a historical term for Vanilla planifolia grown and cured in the Indian Ocean. It is neither a distinct species nor vanilla flavoured with rum.
Is the vanillin percentage enough to choose a bean?
It is an important indicator, but not a complete quality score. Flexibility, moisture, maturity, surface condition and the rest of the aromatic profile also matter.
How should an opened bean be stored?
Keep it in a clean, tightly closed container, away from heat, light and condensation. Instructions on the packaging take priority.
Can I visit without booking?
Yes. The short discovery stop is available during opening hours. WhatsApp is mainly useful for questions or reserving products.
